# Common Errors

A field guide to the clothing problems you'll actually run into. Most are caught by the checks before you build: look at the **Problems** panel (`Ctrl+Shift+M`) and each item's **Findings** tab first. See [Validation](/cloth-tool/about-the-tool/validation) and [Logs and Problems](/cloth-tool/about-the-tool/logs-and-problems).

## Clothing doesn't appear in‑game

**Likely causes:**

* **Not every resource of a split pack is started.** A collection holds at most **255 garments per slot**; a bigger pack is split automatically into `my_pack`, `my_pack2`… and every one of them must be installed and started. See [Limits](/cloth-tool/information-and-errors/limits) and [Building](/cloth-tool/about-the-tool/building).
* **The server loads too many add-on `.ymt` files** for its game build, or two resources declare the same collection. Run [Check a FiveM server](/cloth-tool/about-the-tool/server-check) on the server's `resources` folder.
* **Naming / collection mismatch** — hand‑edited files, or the wrong gender ped. → Rebuild from the tool so names and metadata are generated correctly. See [Naming](/cloth-tool/information-and-errors/naming).
* **An Enhanced file in a Legacy build** (or the wrong edition's resource started). A Legacy build leaves GTA V Enhanced files out. See [GTA V Enhanced](/cloth-tool/about-the-tool/gta-v-enhanced).
* The resource isn't started, or `stream/` files didn't copy. → Check `server.cfg` and the built `stream/` folder.

## Garment shows up but has no texture (flat / grey / purple)

**Likely causes:**

* The `.ydd` model has **no UV coordinates** — there's nothing for the texture to map onto. This is a model problem; it must be re‑exported with UVs.
* The `.ytd` is in a **compression format** the game or the model doesn't handle, or the diffuse map isn't referenced.
* There's **no diffuse texture at all** — neither embedded nor external.

Switch the 3D preview's **Textures** menu to **UVs**: a model with no coordinates there has no UVs. See [3D Preview](/cloth-tool/about-the-tool/3d-preview).

**Fix:** attach a correctly‑named diffuse texture. Loose `.png` and `.dds` files are converted to a real `.ytd` when you build. If the model has no UVs, it has to be fixed in your 3D tool.

## "Texture dimensions are not powers of two"

The texture's width or height isn't a power of two (256/512/1024/2048…). **Fix:** run the [texture optimiser](/cloth-tool/about-the-tool/texture-optimization) (Premium), which resizes to the nearest power of two, or resize it in your image editor.

## No mipmaps

The texture ships without mipmaps, causing shimmering at distance. **Fix:** the texture optimiser (Premium) generates them, or export the texture with mipmaps from your image editor.

## Texture is huge / pack is enormous

Uncompressed or oversized textures (e.g. a 4K skin) bloat the pack and hurt performance. The check **A large texture the mesh barely uses** suggests a smaller size for each one. **Fix:** optimise the textures (Premium) — it recompresses and caps sizes, and never makes a file bigger. Remember skin/raced textures only need 512×512.

## "Invalid slice pitch" / DDS conversion errors

Some source DDS files (especially **BC7 with a DX10 header**) don't decode with older tooling. The Cloth Tool reads every DDS format directly, so re‑importing through the tool usually resolves it. If a specific file still fails, re‑export it as a standard DXT5/BC7 DDS and try again.

## Players crash when clothing loads

**Usual suspects:**

* **Too many add-on `.ymt` files** for a freemode ped on the server's game build. Every add-on pack, every resource of a split pack, and each build's creature metadata file count. → Run [Check a FiveM server](/cloth-tool/about-the-tool/server-check), and use fewer, bigger packs. See [Limits](/cloth-tool/information-and-errors/limits).
* **Corrupt `.ymt`** — don't hand‑edit; let the tool generate it.
* **Invalid shader names** in a drawable break the clothing and can crash. Fix the shader in the [Material Editor](/cloth-tool/about-the-tool/material-editor) (Premium) or re‑export the model with a valid GTA clothing shader.
* **A model with 128 or more pieces on GTA V Enhanced.** The checks flag it; simplify it before building for Enhanced.

## Embedded texture problems

* **Illegal characters** in an embedded texture name → it silently stops working. **Rename** it in the embedded‑texture viewer.
* **Wrongly named** embedded textures → the model can't find them.

## High heels don't work

Since 2.0.8 every build includes the collection's creature metadata file (`mp_creaturemetadata_<collection>.ymt`), which is what makes the **High-heel offset** work in game. Check that:

* the shoe has a **High-heel offset** set;
* the shoe follows the heel bones — the check **High-heel shoe that does not follow the heel bones** flags it, and **Rig for high heels…** fixes it (Premium, see [Rig Repairs](/cloth-tool/about-the-tool/rig-repairs));
* the creature metadata file was installed with the rest of the resource;
* in a **Replace** build, the shoe is within the number of items Rockstar shipped in that slot — the build warns about heels it cannot cover.

**One habit prevents most of this:** import → optimise → clear the errors in **Problems** → **Build**. Do that every time and the list above rarely applies.
